Sabah vs. Barcelona — Champions League tickets in Baku

One of the season's most high-profile football events is taking shape in Baku: reigning Azerbaijani champions Sabah will host Barcelona during the UEFA Champions League league phase. This marks the Masazyr-based club's debut in Europe's premier competition, and the clash with the Catalan giants stands as one of the most prestigious matches in their history. Ticket sales are already underway; given that matches featuring FC Barcelona draw capacity crowds wherever they are played, it is best not to delay purchasing tickets.

The Baku side’s journey to the Champions League was truly dramatic. In the qualifying play-off round, Sabah lost the first leg 1–2 to Israel’s Hapoel Be'er Sheva but staged a last-gasp comeback in the return match: Tellur Mutallimov scored in the 94th minute to force extra time. The hosts found the net twice more during extra time, winning 5–2 and advancing with a 6–4 aggregate score. Thus, the team—founded only in 2017—became the country's second club, after Qarabag, to reach the main tournament.

The draw in Monaco handed the debutants several top-tier opponents, but the arrival of the Catalans has garnered the most attention. Barcelona—a club boasting five Champions League trophies and one of the world's most renowned youth academies—is coming to Baku. Matches between clubs of such vastly different stature are a key highlight of the competition's revamped format: in the league phase, each of the 36 participants plays eight matches, and a single point snatched from a favorite can alter the final standings.

For many Baku residents, the excitement of top-tier football with Sabah truly begins this evening.
