Zenit is a professional football club from Saint Petersburg, currently playing in the Premier League.
The club's exact founding date is unknown. Historians know that in 1925, the Leningrad Metal Plant football club, which gave birth to the future club, participated in regular national games.
In 1935, the position of "head coach" became one of the team's turning points, and Pavel Butusov first held this position. In 1936, the future Zenit team changed coaches and debuted in the first USSR Football Championship under the name "Stalinets." They then won the USSR Cup and enjoyed a winning streak, but finished the season in fourth place.
In 1939, the Leningrad Metal Plant, under whose patronage the club had been, was transferred to the People's Commissariat of Armaments. There was a Zenit Sports Society here, and the FC was renamed, and it still exists under this name.
During the Great Patriotic War, the main squad was evacuated to Kazan. The team's veterans remained in Leningrad itself; unfortunately, many of them did not survive the siege of the city, but those who did managed to survive in 1942 held "siege matches." In 1944, the club won the USSR Cup.
The history of FC Zenit has seen ups and downs, various changes of players and head coaches—it is a living organism that has survived a lot and continues to live, delighting its many fans.
In 1984, Zenit became the USSR Champion. In modern history, they have won the Russian Super Cup four times and the Premier League Cup in 2003. They also have victories in the Euro League: the 2007/08 UEFA Cup and the 2008 UEFA Super Cup.
