Description
The Republican Stadium named after Tofik Bahramov, located in the heart of Baku, is a significant sports facility with a rich history. Opened on September 16, 1951, the stadium is named after the outstanding Azerbaijani referee Tofik Bahramov. Today it is the main venue for home matches of the Agdam club “Qarabag” and the Azerbaijani national football team.
Construction of the stadium began in 1939, but was suspended due to the Great Patriotic War. After the resumption of work, the stadium was inaugurated in 1951. Over the years of its existence, it changed its name more than once, until in 1993 it was named in honor of Tofik Bahramov.
In 2012, the stadium underwent a large-scale reconstruction carried out by the Korean company Samhwa Telecom. The upgrades increased the seating capacity to 31,200, making it one of the largest sports venues in the region.
The Republican Stadium named after Tofik Bahramov is not only a venue for football matches, but also a venue for international tournaments. In September-October 2012, matches of the Women's Under-17 World Cup were held here, including the opening match and the final game.
